Health experts have gone on record as having stated that by having proper toilets and by following good personal hygiene and hygienic practices several diseases from which the general rural population suffers could be avoided.

The Government of Tamil Nadu has come forward to extend partial help towards establishing low cost toilets in the backyard of each rural household. The contribution in the form of porcelain pan and foot rest valued at Rs. 500, is provided to the beneficiaries.

The beneficiaries are expected to contribute Rs. 500 by way of construction materials and labor contribution. However, since each low cost toilet costs nearly Rs. 1500, the beneficiaries look forward to a donation of Rs. 500 for constructing one low cost toilet.

Janez Hacin, one of Tamil Nadu Foundation's well-wishers and a regular donor has donated Rs. 1,00,000 to help R. Ilango to construct 200 low cost toilets in Kuthambakkam village. Many toilets have already been constructed and the beneficiary rural households are extremely happy to use these low cost toilets.

Herein, an excellent opportunity is available for our Tamil Nadu Foundation members to contribute and participate in one of the most important projects, namely Low Cost Toilet Project. The benefit of the low cost toilets in terms of improved health condition, and absence of diseases in the area would impel many Panchayat leaders to approach the Government to organize more such low cost toilets in their Panchayats.

TNF members and other well-wishers may contribute towards at least 100 low cost toilets per Panchayat at $15 per household. Ideally, members from a particular district could join together and decide to provide low cost toilets to at least 50% of Panchayats in that particular district. This is a very useful and excellent project, which can really help in controlling many diseases that normally affect the rural folks.
