USED LAPTOP PROJECT

The use of computers or the establishing of computer centers in schools needs no extra emphasis. TNF's Chennai Chapter has applied for the necessary CCP (Customs Clearance Permit) to import used computers to establish TNF Computer Centers in rural schools of donor's choice. The process of obtaining CCP in orde to import the used computers has been initiated and will be obtained in due course.

However, in the meantime and as a regular program, we may donate used Pent II and Pent I laptops to various rural schools.

Our suggestion in this regard would be as follows:

  • First we could encourage one of our TNF members to coordinate this project at the USA end. Let us call him US Coordinator for TNF-Laptop Project.
  • We could request all those who have used laptops to spare to send an email to the coordinator at the US end with a copy to the TN Chapter.
  • Generally customs does not object to people from the US carrying one used laptop. Hence those who volunteer to carry one laptop to Chennai during their next visit may inform the US coordinator of their travel plans with a copy again to the TN Chapter.
  • The US coordinator and TN Chapter can work in close coordination and request the used laptop donor to mail the same to the volunteer visiting Chennai, sufficiently in advance.
  • The TN Chapter may make suitable arrangements to collect the used laptop from the volunteer on his arrival in Chennai. Until we are able to help the rural schools with computer centers, the donation of used laptops to schools will initiate the HMs, teachers, and some of the students into computer culture and enable them to make full use of computers when the computer centers are established.
